Corruption and Sexual Abuse in Polygamous Groups

Crime; Corruption and Sexual Abuse in Polygamous Groups
Principle Voices maintains that there is no more crime and abuse among polygamists than there are among monogamists. I’m afraid that’s wishful thinking on their part. The cultish nature of organized Mormon fundamentalism provides a medium where crime and abuse not only flourish, but is encouraged.
Sexual intercourse and multiple wives is the axis around which Mormon polygamy revolves, a fact that is indisputable. I can assure you that all those pregnant plural wives didn’t get that way by artificial insemination. You cannot "raise up a righteous seed," in other words, children, without sexual intercourse. Mormonism teaches that loyal polygamists will procreate spirit children in the afterlife. These spirit children will be produced the same way children on earth are produced, by sexual intercourse. These spirit children will eventually populate new worlds. Only polygamists will be allowed to procreate in the heavens, and that means only polygamists will be permitted to have sexual intercourse in heaven. This is solid, unequivocal Mormon doctrine. Therefore, it is not an exaggeration to say that Mormonism is about having sexual intercourse on earth and in heaven.
Some polygamist leaders downplay the sex act. When Joseph Musser was in his twilight years, to old to enjoy sexual intercourse, he published a little pamphlet entitled, "The Law of Chastity." The pamphlet, directed at men, restricted sexual intercourse to the procreation of children only, not pleasure.
Musser knew that for heterosexual men, sexual intercourse was the ultimate pleasurable experience, and that the 132 Section of the D & C worked like an aphrodisiac on some men; and he knew even back in the thirties, that in the pursuit of power, money and sexual pleasure, there was a propensity for many men to abuse the principle of plural marriage.
In the Allred Group [AUB] they make a big show of protecting and preserving the virtue of the young, unmarried ladies. Many sermons are expounded on the subject. During special events like "girl’s camp," or other exclusively girl functions, trusted priesthood men would volunteer or be appointed as guards or chaperons to make sure the girls’ virtue was protected, as if there was an on-going conspiracy of unrighteous men and boys watching for the chance to rob these girls of their virtue. This ostentatious show was more window dressing that reacting to a real threat. Protecting the virtue of young ladies was part of the well planned illusions that polygamy is not about sex. If the truth were known, many of the men volunteering to stand guard over the virtue of puberty aged girls were no different than the homosexuals who volunteer to become boy scout leaders. In other words, they were there to be near the very thing that turned them on.
AUB had strict rules regarding dating. A young man, or an older polygamist seeking to enlarge his family with another wife, must first obtain permission from the prophet before he is allowed to seek permission from the father, to court the lass that has caught his eye. If a would be Romeo desired a woman who was an adult and a recent convert, the prophet acts as her father and protector. On the surface this all looks like the prophet’s motive is in the best interest of the female, making sure she is not coupled with an unworthy man. Not so! It is a procedure to make sure the prophet has control over the "merchandising" of women.
A worthy man in all of the organized polygamist groups is a loyal follower who has made a meaningful contribution to the prophet and his organization. Goodness, honesty, valor and integrity - those clean things that produce excellence of character in a husband.- are seldom taken into consideration. The prophet is a dictator. Therefore, the giving of wives is designed to increase or preserve the power of the dictator. The show of virtue is a deception to distract from the prophet’s true longing for authority and power. In fact, like all dictators, the Mormon prophet makes use of ruthless men who will lie, cheat, steal and even kill; and as rewards, these men are often given many wives.
I have to acknowledge that not all polygamist men are power-hungry womanizers. I have met a few men in the Allred Group who I believe have tried to live plural marriage by the book. I have to admit that in the Allred Group a man and woman have more freedom of choice regarding marriage than the other groups. The injustice comes from the careful guiding of women to favorite sons and generous tithe payers. The favoritism is obvious. The blue bloods, the more powerful, the higher priesthood holders, the unscrupulous, the loyal zealots, and the most affluent wind up with the best looking and the most wives.
It is presumed that the prophet is endowed with god-inspired discernment, especially in matters of money and marriage. But from my observation Owen Allred’s success ratio is far below 50% - his predictions are no more accurate than his ability to detect sex offenders among his apostles. His ability to surround himself with honest men of integrity is either poor or planned. I could name many corrupt men who have been close to Owen and his priesthood but it wouldn’t be fair to their families, except in the case of Dennis Matthews and John Putvin, former member of Owen’s inner circle. Matthews and Putvin were key players in the theft of Virginia Hill’s money. At the apogee of Matthews’ polygamist career he had five pretty wives and was bishop over Hill’s 1.5 million dollars. Now he only has one wife and is in indebted to Virginia for the money he helped steal.
In spite of all the rules and show of preserving virtue by the Allred Group, rumors of promiscuity, child molest, and corrupt priesthood coverups consistently circulated in the group. The rumors often involved promiscuous siblings engaged in homosexuality, girls performing fellatio on brothers, and fondling between half brothers and half sisters. This happens because in the larger families the children are often left alone for long periods without supervision. Promiscuity among siblings is usually shrugged off by priesthood leaders as innocent experimenting, especially if their children are involved. The most disgusting rumors involved fathers molesting daughters.
I spent eight years of my life as a deputy sheriff specializing in sex crimes investigation. I taught at the Utah State Police Academy and participated in many sex crime seminars, some at college levels. I have investigated about every sex crime imaginable, from murder to peeking in bedroom windows. Sex offenders are stereotypical, they fall into an identifiable patterns. Each offender, such as the child molester, has specific characteristics. In other words, when I heard the rumors in the Allred Group, I was able to tell when they had the ring of truth, and in the Allred Group, there were a lot of ringing bells. At one point, it got so bad that a plural wife of apostle, Lynn Thompson, was permitted to organize a vigilante committee to root out the sex offenders in the group.
In talking to dissidents from other groups, I am convinced that the Allred Group is atypical when it comes to crime, corruption and sexual abuse. That is why I refer to the polygamist subculture as a breeding ground for corruption of every kind.
Three men in Owen Allred’s apostolic priesthood council were kicked out of the group for allegedly molesting their children and grandchildren, but only after it could no longer be covered up by Owen his successor, J. LaMoine Jenson. These alleged men were pious Mormons who enjoyed the same honor and prestige as an apostle of the LDS Church, men supposedly of peerless wisdom and integrity. One of the three, Gustavo Galindo Palacious, is currently serving time in the Utah State Prison for one of the most disgusting sex crimes imaginable.
When you have a sexually orientated religion with a primary tenet that glorifies a biological urge your going to ultimately have trouble. It doesn’t matter how skillful the sex act is veiled with haloes and noble rhetoric - the power of the sex urge will eventually break through and often manifests itself as an act of perversion. Look at the Catholic Church, celibacy and her pedophile priests.
All other Christian faiths, excepting Mormonism, practices monogamy and abhors polygamy. The wise men in those faiths know that the sex drive is like a fire that needs to be contained. But in Mormonism, the effects of Section 132 on unscrupulous men has the effect of tossing gasoline onto the flames.
That’s why Mormon fundamentalism attracts men like Tom Green, Brian David Mitchell, Ervil LeBaron, Jim Harmston, Daniel Kingston, J. LaMoine Jenson, John Putvin, Dennis Matthews, Dan and Ron Lafferty, the Swapp brothers, Warren Jeffs, and hundreds more. Mormon fundamentalism provides a medium for the imposter, the pretender, the liar, the thief, the sex pervert, the ruthless, the power hungry, the zealot, the sadist, the masochist, the gullible, the tyrant, the racist, the socialist, the communist, and unfortunately, the idealist, who more often than not gets out of the quagmire before he is corrupted.
Let us not forget that coupled with the sex drive in Mormon fundamentalism is the rule of authority and power. The roll of the prophet is not to control or subdue the sex drive but to give it full reign - manipulate it, direct it, and profit from it. Sex and authority is a dangerous combination if the goal is to capitalize upon the vulnerability of adherents. The tyrannical rule of Warren Jeffs is a classic example. Look at it this way - our government enacts laws to control unbridled passion, protect virtue and punish offenders. 132 has the tendency to unleash passion by permitting sex with more than one wife of any age.
Sexual abuse is not the only form of corruption that is endemic in the polygamist culture. In the organized groups the prophet and his gang of priesthood predators are in need of money to support their families, church facilities, ranches, and their secular machinations like speculative money making schemes. Thousands and thousands of tithing dollars has been lost in the Allred Group on money-making schemes like pig farms, garment manufacturing and gold extractions formulas.
The multimillion dollar Granite Ranch, ostensibly the property of AUB, was obtained primarily with donations and tithing. However, the ranch that members believe belongs to AUB is recorded as Red Cedar Corporation. The directors are Owen Allred, LaMoine Jenson and Glen Allred. The Red Cedar Corporation was a secret shell corporation until discovered by myself and co-investigator, Rod Williams, during the Virginia Hill investigation. The Granite Ranch has never been self sufficient and for years, and in all probability still does, drain tithing money from AUB at the tune of $30,000.00 per month. But no one can see the $30,000 improvements.
Ron Bierer, a once ecstatic convert to AUB, gave the bishop of Pinesdale, an AUB polygamist community, $10,000.00 cash with the stipulation he purchase wheat for the community. When he visited Pinesdale a week or two later he asked the bishop if he purchased the wheat. According to Bierer, the bishop told him that the priesthood leaders, the Jessop brothers, heard about the money and took it from him, saying that they had better use for the money. Of course, no one knows what that use was.
At the time Bierer was having problems with the IRS . He said Owen Allred talked him into Quick Claiming his hardware store in Hamilton, Montana, over to Unified Industries, another Owen Allred corporation, to keep it out of the hands of the IRS. When Bierer asked for the property back, Owen refused. It wasn’t until Bierer publically harassed Owen with signs and demonstrations until Owen finally relented and gave him back his property.
Gary Watson, now deceased, told me a similar story about valuable Panquich Lake property. Watson said that an apostle and friend, also now deceased, talked him into Quick Claiming the property over to Unified Industries as a safeguard. Once done, he was threatened with arrest by Kent Allred if he trespassed on the property. I was able to obtain copies of UI minutes showing the UI executive committee eventually sold the property. I suspect the money was used to finance selfish interests.
I asked Watson if he could prove he was tricked into deeding over the property, why he didn’t take UI to court and get it back. He said he didn’t want to cause Owen any problems - he believed Owen held all the keys of the priesthood.
Tithing is a donation free and clear unless stipulated for a specific use. If it is not used as stipulated, it is a crime.
I cannot over emphasis the reality that Mormon polygamy is about power, sex and money, and when you mix it together with religion, common sense tells you that there will ultimately be crime and corruption.
In a monogamous marriage there is no pressure to seek out and capture plural wives - no pressure to multiple and replenish - no prophet that can arbitrarily take your wife and give her to someone more loyal. In monogamy, tithing and groveling is not a prerequisite to obtaining a wife. In monogamy the woman is married to you, not the priesthood. The bonding agent is love, mutual need and commitment, not a pretended revelation. A polygamist marriage supercedes love and can be dissolved by the pious whims of the prophet.
Voices in Harmony are wrong. Crime, corruption and sexual abuse are indigenous to the polygamist cults . Crime, corruption and sexual abuse are much more prevalent in polygamy than in monogamy. It is the stuff that drives smart women out of the cults and keeps Tapestry Against Polygamy in business.
